Mission

The mission of the Nurse serving the Behavioral Health Department is to support the psychiatric providers in offering our patients outstanding quality care. The nurse will serve a growing patient population in providing health screenings, patient education, and a compassionate response to patient requests.

Outcomes

Direct patient care:

  • Patients are educated about psychiatry services and related health issues (i.e. smoking cessation) and a medical history is taken prior to their initial evaluation.
  • Patients’ vitals are taken and drug and physical health and mental health screening is done prior to each psychiatric visit. Injections given when necessary. Labs drawn when necessary.
  • Patient education related to current or new psychiatric prescriptions, side effects and overall health is provided to all psychiatry patients.
  • All patient paperwork is completed and returned to patients in a timely manner (i.e. disability or necessary patient letters).
  • Patients receive their lab results in a timely manner.
  • All patient requests for refills are addressed within 1 business day by checking iSTOP, logging findings and queuing the prescription for the provider. Patients who require assistance with medication receive the appropriate level of support.
  • All patients have an up-to-date treatment plan and receive the appropriate support and education.
  • Patient lab screening needs for various psychotropic medication’s screenings are tracked and the provider is informed when they are due.
  • AIMS neurological evaluation for TD is tracked and completed annually and the provider is informed of the results.

Patient navigation:

Within ECHC:

  • Collaboration with the patients’ primary care team to encourage patients to get appropriate medical evaluations and laboratory testing.
  • When applicable, collaboration occurs with the patients’ OB-GYN team.

Outside ECHC:

  • Collaboration with hospital within 24-hours of a patient’s admission or as soon as possible thereafter.
  • Discharge records are obtained and reviewed prior to the next follow up visit.

Competencies

  • RN license (clinical experience in psychiatric nursing a plus)
  • CPR certification
  • Phlebotomy experience
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Strong commitment to team dynamic as well as the ability to take initiative
  • Self-motivated for personal and professional growth
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on compassion
  • Knowledge of Spanish a plus
