Valparaiso City Services is searching for a Skilled Pipe Mechanic for the Collections & Distribution Division. This position comes with great benefits, including health/dental/vision plans, along with a 401k employer match, paid holidays and generous PTO plan!

Job Purpose: Incumbent serves as a Skilled Pipe Mechanic for the Collections and Distribution Department, responsible for performing installation, maintenance, and repair activities on the distribution and collections infrastructure system.

Essential Job Functions:·

· Installs, builds, and/or repairs manholes, intakes, sewer lines, storm lines, water lines, streets, sidewalks, and curbs, including locating areas needing repair and obtaining materials required.

· Operates light and heavy equipment and machines to perform job functions including, but not limited to: light equipment, mowers, pick-up trucks, one-ton trucks, forklifts, payloader, tandem dump truck and sewer cleaner truck.

· Performs preventive maintenance inspections and locates existing sewer collection and water distribution infrastructures for the “Call Before You Dig” service.

· Performs various support activities including maintaining equipment, locating and repairing hydrants, repairing water leaks, flushing lines, site repair, and construction inspection.

· Regular 40-hour work weeks with opportunities for overtime and on-call duties.

Knowledge:

· High school diploma or GED; experience in maintenance work involving utility maintenance and general repairs is a plus.

· Must be at least 18 years of age.

· Ability to meet all employer and department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test and essential function screening.

· Working knowledge of City streets and routes to complete work assignments is a plus.

Job Skills:

· Ability to operate equipment and machines to perform job functions including, but not limited to: light and heavy equipment, mowers, pick-up trucks, one-ton trucks, tandem dump trucks, forklifts, sewer cleaner trucks, hydro-excavator, concrete finishing tools, etc.

· Ability to read and interpret detailed prints, sketches, specifications, technical manuals, instruments, gauges and dials.

· Ability to obtain and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within one (1) year of hire and demonstrated safe driving record.

Ability to work extended hours and overtime as required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $21.00 - $23.00 per hour

Experience:

• pipe installation: 1 year (Preferred)
• Heavy equipment operation: 1 year (Preferred)

License/Certification:

• Driver's License (Required)
