BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Director of Purchasing, lead a small crew in performing specialized activities related to the operation and maintenance of the Publications Department; operate and provide training in high-speed digital reprographic and peripheral equipment to assure District printing needs and timelines are satisfied.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Senior Publications Technician acts as a lead in the department by providing work direction for a small crew, conducts quality control and performs specialized activities in support of the operation and maintenance of the Publications Department. The Publications Technician is responsible to receive, verify, modify and complete print request jobs according to department guidelines.


Examples of Duties

Operate and provide training in a variety of high-speed digital reprographic and peripheral equipment in the reproduction of printed materials such as booklets, letters, bulletins, business cards, posters, newsletters, brochures, forms, including those utilizing variable data and a variety of other District documents; coordinate duplication and printing orders by priority; maintain confidentiality concerning District materials. E

Lead a small crew in performing specialized activities related to the operation and maintenance of the Publications Department; monitor completed jobs and works in progress to assure proper application of paper weights and sizes, digital printing processes, inks and related specifications. E

Operate a variety of printing and finishing equipment including a collator, drill, scanner, cutter, folder, stitcher, coil binder, digital printer, computer and assigned software including use and maintenance of web based online job ordering system, and graphics and word-processing programs. E

Communicate with District staff and outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns related to orders, deliveries, specifications, technical issues and other printing related matters; provide information to print production users. E

Review work submitted for reproduction; proofread work to assure completeness, quality and clarity of original copy; prepare copiers for extended production runs and monitor equipment during the duplication process; conduct quality control when work is completed. E

Using standard text and graphics software applications, prepare submitted work for printing and finishing. E

Clean and maintain equipment in efficient working condition; oil and perform minor repairs on equipment as necessary; maintain inventory of printing supplies; requisition, receive and store supplies. E

Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to printing data, deliveries, supplies, production, revenue, requests and related information. E

Perform a variety of clerical work and technical duties as assigned; compile a wide variety of data; maintain filing system; open and sort mail. E

Provide work direction and assist Publications Department staff with work projects as assigned.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school supplemented by college-level course work in computer science or a related field and two years of experience operating digital reproduction equipment.
