Central Garden & Pet Company’s, Nylabone - Pet Segment located in Neptune City, NJ is searching for a Research & Development Engineer. Reporting to the R&D Director, the R&D Engineer will be responsible for developing and improving plastic products through the use of scientific and engineering principles. This involves designing experiments, analyzing data, and making recommendations for new product development or process improvements to support our Nylabone products.

- Research and Development of new materials and products as well as product innovation for various business units within the organization.
- Establish and maintain supplier relationships to support the research and sourcing of new material to further enhance our product line.
- Process new products based on approved project scopes from executive management.
- Execute initial ingredient specification and sourcing with a balanced understanding of the quality and cost.
- Collaborate with the Marketing team to evaluate the feasibility and timing of the project.
- Independently operate equipment, including but not limited to injection molding and extrusion, to produce R&D samples.
- Organize and submit sample requests to scale up to production runs.
- Cross-functional Collaboration with various departments such as sourcing, operations, quality, and packaging.
- Interact with other departments such as Quality Control and production to achieve a smooth development, scale and commercialization process.
- Assist in the evaluation of projects throughout the manufacturing stages.
- Manage Physical & Chemical property testing internally and at third parties.
- Optimize and Evaluate Process and Product Specifications.
IDEAL CANDIDATE ATTRIBUES:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Plastic Engineering or related technical field
- Experience in Injection Molding Required
- Experience in Extrusion and related equipment preferred
- Familiarity with Mold and machine design
- Knowledge of a variety of plastic and elastomers
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables
- Understanding and prior experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and/or Creo
- Must have attention to detail, sense of urgency, be self-directed and display strong organizational skills
