We seek a part-time weekend librarian to work two weekends each month. This is an ideal job for someone just starting in the library profession or for a retired librarian who wants to remain active in the field. The System will hire a responsible, creative, and enthusiastic individual who embraces and thrives in an active, fast-paced, culturally diverse environment. A successful candidate will deliver excellent customer service, will have knowledge of print and online resources to assist library patrons with their information needs, and technical skills to assist patrons using computers. The person in this job will act as a U.S. Passport Acceptance Agent. The right candidates will be energetic, creative, and tech-savvy with a passion for, and strong commitment to, public service. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Public Services.
Minimum Training and Experience
This position requires an MLS from an ALA-accredited university or current enrollment in an ALA-accredited MLS program with requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position; or a bachelor's degree and two years' public library experience, or any combination of education, training, and experience that provides requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for the position. Previous public library reference experience is preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature or level may be required as assigned, and job assignments and work schedules are subject to change in the future.
- Provides reference services to library patrons in person, by telephone, or online.
- Provides computer assistance to patrons.
- Handles and executes applications for U.S. passports.
- Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to outlined procedures.
- Meets System expectation to participate in at least two approved off-site outreach programs each year.
- Meets System expectation to complete at least 10 hours of approved work-related training activities during each year of employment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of reference sources, both in print and online.
- Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing customer service to patrons of all ages.
- Knowledge of general library principles and philosophy.
- Knowledge of library practices and of ARLS policies, procedures, and activities.
- Knowledge of PINES library catalog and library subscription databases.
- Ability to answer questions, explain procedures, and enforce policies.
- Ability to employ appropriate reference interview techniques to accurately determine and address users’ information needs.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and make independent and critical decisions using established practices and procedures.
- Ability to keep up-to-date on library-related technology trends and developments, and to learn new technologies in a timely manner.
- Ability to meet the requirements to become a U.S. Passport agent, as stipulated by the U.S. Department of State.
- Ability to learn U.S. passport execution procedures and to clearly communicate those policies and requirements.
- Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
- Knowledge of readers’ advisory resources.
- Ability to use, understand, and assist patrons with computer applications.
- Ability to work with people with tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize assignments and activities.
- Skill in using Office computer software, including Word and Excel.
- Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures.
- Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of Medium Work.
- If library hours are such that the library is closed on Sunday accommodations may be made to make up those hours.
