TRUCK DRIVER CDL-A STREETS/SANITATION LABORER (F/T)

DEFINITION:

Employee is responsible for the safe, economical, and efficient operation of sanitation trucks and all heavy refuse equipment, including driving and collection of solid waste. Performs a variety of manual labor tasks of an unskilled or semi-skilled nature: Duties include collection and disposal of refuse and a variety of manual labor tasks in the area of sanitation and streets. This employee is under the direct supervision of the Public Works Superintendent and further under the overall direction of the Public Works Director. Duties may also include operating light to heavy duty trucks and/or sanitation trucks as needed in either a specific or a variety of maintenance, construction, and/or utility tasks. Instructions to the employee are specific; however, independent judgment is sometimes used to complete the task. Employees are required to know and follow all safety policies. The employee will be required to perform any other tasks as may be required to accomplish the essential functions of the position as set out herein.

BENEFITS:

This is a full-time position, Monday-Thursday; 6am-4:30pm with an hourly rate of $17.17. EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION:

  • Work environment involves some exposure to physical risks such as moving mechanical parts. Which require following basic safety precautions.
  • The employee will operate a variety of heavy and light trucks and other equipment.
  • The employee will also use a variety of hand tools and small machinery.
  • The employee will be exposed to all types of weather with possible exposure to loud noise, dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, toxic substances, and machinery with moving parts.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds.
  • The employee will also be required to carry, dig, climb, and bend.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and ability to adjust focus for operation of machines and equipment, determination accuracy and thoroughness of work and observation of general surroundings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Observes traffic laws and regulations.
  • Performs routine service on trucks including, but not limited to, cleaning, fueling, checking fluids, checking instruments, mirrors, brakes, steering and signals.
  • Operates truck to transport items to and/or from specified destinations.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, detects needed repairs, and makes necessary routine adjustments to equipment.
  • Operates medium to heavy trucks
  • Operates Sanitation Truck.
  • Cleans equipment using the appropriate materials. Works in a variety of weather conditions while maintaining public safety and removing hazards.
  • Works with cleaning fluids using normal, routine, protective equipment in order to clean equipment.
  • Detects hazardous situations at work (i.e., hears audible traffic sounds when working near moving traffic and in confined residential areas).
  • Observes, inspects, or monitors conditions to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards
  • Meets scheduling and attendance requirements.
  • Learns job-related material through on-the-job training regarding equipment safety, repair, and construction techniques.

  • Performs routine and repetitive work as part of a crew in collecting garbage, refuse and other waste materials.
  • Required to operate light duty vehicles, riding or push mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, rakes, shovels, hand tools, etc.
  • Removes debris from street right-of-way’s, catch basins, drainage ways and other City property.

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Employee works under the hazardous conditions associated with moving traffic and adverse weather conditions and has responsibility for the safety of workers connected with the operation of equipment, including the use of appropriate safety equipment and procedures.
  • Employees may be called out for emergency repairs and must be willing to work overtime and scheduled standby.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • Advanced operation, maintenance; heavy and light duty trucks.
  • The hazards and applicable safety precautions for heavy truck and sanitation;

equipment capabilities, limitations, and safe operating characteristics;

  • Traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations relating to the operation of solid waste equipment and heavy trucks
  • Skill in the efficient and safe operation of assigned equipment.

Ability to:

  • Effectively perform work assignments in accordance with verbal and written instructions
  • Maintain a safe working environment
  • Work independently in performing regular duties
  • Work independently and without supervision daily (by assignment)
  • Read and write at a level required to perform the duties of the position
  • Perform incidental construction work and manual labor as necessary
  • Keep records and make reports
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other employees
  • Handle all physical requirements of the class
  • Operate all required equipment; and
  • Operate heavy, medium, or light equipment when not operating more complex equipment

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualification(s) Required:

  • Must possess a valid Tennessee Commercial Driver’s License CDL-A
  • Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to 2 years’ experience operating heavy trucks
  • Graduation from high school or GED
  • Pre-employment: Must pass background check, physical and drug screen
  • Random: This class is subject to DOT Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) drug and alcohol testing as outlined in 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 382.
