Water Operations and Utility Locator Manager
Job description
SUMMARY:
Operates, maintains, and controls Authority-owned water treatment systems throughout Pearl River County, to ensure reliable, safe, compliant, economical and efficient operation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Oversee all aspects of water system operation, maintenance and monitoring.
- Assist in repair, testing and disinfection of water mains.
- Routinely flush and clean water mains.
- Keep water system plans up to date.
- Operate and maintain well pumps.
- Collect and transport water samples.
- Supervise treatment and assure proper monitoring and control.
- Clean and disinfect storage tanks.
- Protect equipment and facilities from corrosion.
- Monitor pump motors to detect unusual noises, vibrations or excessive heat.
- Adjust and clean pump seals and packing glands and clean mechanical seals.
- Repair and overhaul pumps, motors, chlorinators and control valves.
- Safely handle, store and utilize treatment chemicals.
- Keep records and prepare reports.
- Provide cost data and budget needs to the system owner.
- Perform efficiency tests on pumps, wells and other equipment.
- Troubleshoot and correct minor electrical and mechanical equipment problems.
- Monitor for hazardous atmospheres and confined spaces and correct any problems before entry.
- Conduct safety inspections, follow safety rules and provide safety training.
- Troubleshoot and address water related complaints.
- Discuss with customers their water-related concerns.
- Communicate effectively with owners, employees, customers, regulatory personnel and others.
- Respond to water system emergencies.
- Respond to water inquiries.
REQUIRED EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Minimum two years- experience in water/wastewater field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Technical training is desired.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Ability to operate laptop/I-pad.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blue prints, maps, as-built drawings and procedure manuals.
- Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence. Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate with other employees and the general public and regulatory officials.
- Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute volume, flow, detentions, flow velocities, pressure, feet head, rates, percentages and ratios.
- Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to perform all laboratory operational tests required to determine facility performance.
DESIRED SKILLS:
- Knowledge of variable frequency drives, PLC’s, lab equipment, pumps, electrical controls.
- Extensive general maintenance skills.
- Knowledge of plumbing and electrical and various styles of pumps.
- General knowledge of computer operations and software programs.
- Ability to work weekends and holidays, be on call and respond to calls during non-work hours.
- SCADA knowledge a plus.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Valid Mississippi Driver’s License with a clean driving record
DESIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
State of Mississippi Water Operator Licenses Class C
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to walk; stoop, kneel, crunch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is required to stand 6-8 hours per day, and to occasionally climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat, and vibration. Occasionally, the employee will be required to enter confined spaces, such as valve pits, sewer manholes, wet-wells, digester, etc. The noise level in the work environments is usually moderate.

Due to the Authority’s critical responsibility to provide sanitary wastewater services and safe drinking water to our customers at all times, employees must be committed to making themselves available for extensive work hours before, during, and following man-made or natural disasters, or inclement weather, placing these responsibilities ahead of personal and family needs.

Pay: $18.00 - $23.00 per hour
